Leh, Sep 24 (KNC): Following violent clashes during statehood protests, a curfew has been imposed across Leh district of the Union Territory, Lt Governor Kavinder Gupta said on Wednesday, warning that strict action will be taken against those responsible for the unrest.
Addressing the public, Gupta as per news agency Kashmir News Corner — KNC held vested interests responsible for the violence and loss of lives. “The curfew has been imposed as a precautionary measure. People have lost their lives here and I express my condolences to their families. All necessary measures will be taken to prevent more casualties,” he said.
The LG stressed that violence in any form will not be tolerated and directed police and district administration to identify and act against elements disturbing peace and damaging public property.
“This violence has been orchestrated under a conspiracy to disturb the peaceful atmosphere in Ladakh,” he added.
Four persons were killed and over 45 others, including 22 police personnel, were injured during day-long clashes between protesters and security forces. A BJP office, a police vehicle, and several private cars were set ablaze amid the shutdown called by Leh Apex Body (LAB), which has been demanding statehood and extension of the Sixth Schedule for the past five years.
Gupta appealed to the people of Ladakh to maintain peace and not be misled by those attempting to disrupt social harmony and public order. (KNC)
