Kulgam, Nov 23: CPI(M) leader and MLA Kulgam, Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami, on Sunday strongly opposed the proposed electricity tariff hike in Jammu and Kashmir, calling the move “unacceptable” amid worsening power shortages and the approaching peak winter.
Speaking to reporters in Behibagh, Tarigami as per news agency Kashmir News Corner — KNC said the region already faces severe power deficits, while its water resources are extensively used for electricity generation elsewhere. He warned that raising tariffs would disproportionately burden poor households and urged the administration to immediately withdraw the proposal. He added that continued neglect of public concerns could trigger protests.
Tarigami also called on the Union Government to announce an immediate loan waiver for farmers in Jammu, Kashmir, and Punjab who suffered extensive crop losses this year due to floods and prolonged road closures. He noted that apple growers in Kashmir faced heavy financial damage after the Srinagar-Jammu highway remained shut for nearly 15 days, affecting the rural economy. He criticised the government for providing concessions to large corporate groups while delaying relief for small farmers and orchardists.
Highlighting concerns over the safety and dignity of Kashmiris living outside the Valley, Tarigami urged the Centre to ensure students, workers, and professionals are not subjected to harassment or suspicion following isolated incidents in Delhi. He said thousands of Kashmiri youth pursue education and employment in other states and must feel secure and supported.
“Treating an entire community with suspicion does not serve the interests of the country,” Tarigami said, stressing that building confidence among people is essential for peace and security.
He called for a comprehensive relief package covering power, agriculture, and community protection to safeguard the livelihoods and well-being of Jammu and Kashmir residents. (KNC)
